Now, we talk about the learning, the fears, the frustrations, and the joys of aging. Inventing Ourselves Again is like sitting in on a conversation with friends.
Educated, articulate women examine ideas and feelings common to all American women at the end of the 20th century. It reads the way women talk to each other over lunch, on a long walk, during an afternoon at the beach.
Join this circle of friends. Amy Sue Bix locates the origins of such conflict in the Great Depression of the s, when the country's social and economic crisis forced many Americans to re-examine ideas about science, technology, and progress. In The March of Spare Time, Susan Currell explores how and why leisure became an object of such intense interest, concern, and surveillance during the Great Depression.
As Americans experienced record high levels of unemployment, leisure was thought by reformers, policy makers, social scientists, physicians, labor unions, and even artists to be both a cause of and a solution to society's most entrenched ills. Of all the problems that faced America in the s, only leisure seemed to offer a panacea for the rest. The problem centered on divided opinions over what constituted proper versus improper use of leisure time.
On the one hand, sociologists and reformers excoriated as improper such leisure activities as gambling, loafing, and drinking. On the other, the Works Progress Administration and the newly professionalized recreation experts promoted proper leisure activities such as reading, sports, and arts and crafts.
Such attention gave rise to new ideas about how Americans should spend their free time to better themselves and their nation. These ideas were propagated in social science publications and proliferated into the wider cultural sphere.
Films, fiction, and radio also engaged with new ideas about leisure, more extensively than has previously been recognized. In examining this wide spectrum of opinion, Currell offers the first full-scale account of the fears and hopes surrounding leisure in the s, one that will be an important addition to the cultural history of the period.
Neuroscience has found that neuroplasticity of brain cells allows brains to invent themselves. Remodeling of brains can be facilitated by schools and universities. What may be done to accelerate that positive inventing so as to prepare for rapidly accelerating change?
What is worse than being blind to something? Being blind to what our brains can do is slowly changing. Brain researchers recently found that we can now be our own subjects of brain experimentation. Why is there such a striking difference between English spelling and English pronunciation?
How did our seemingly relatively simple grammar rules develop? What are the origins of regional dialect, literary language, and everyday speech, and what do they have to do with you? Seth Lerer's Inventing English is a masterful, engaging history of the English language from the age of Beowulf to the rap of Eminem.
Many have written about the evolution of our grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, but only Lerer situates these developments in the larger history of English, America, and literature. You can download your books fast The Polish Maelstrom.

What drives the excessive risk-taking or the need for intense friendships common to this age group? Why does an easy child become a challenging teenager? And why is it that many mental illnesses - depression, addiction, schizophrenia - begin during these formative years.
Drawing upon her cutting-edge research in her London laboratory, award-winning neuroscientist, Sarah-Jayne Blakemore explains what happens inside the adolescent brain, and what her team's experiments have revealed about our behaviour, and how we relate to each other and our environment as we?
